Australian Group Races are the highest class of thoroughbred race in Australian racing. The most recognised group races in Australia are the Melbourne Cup, Caulfield Cup, Golden slipper and WS Cox Plate, which are all Group 1 races.

Group races total over 540+ races each year which works out around 2-3% of total races held each season in Australia.

Group races are divided into 4 categories;
Group 1 - at least $250,000 prizemoney - 60+ races per season
Group 2 - at least $125,000 prizemoney - 80+ races per season
Group 3 - at least $75,000 prizemoney - 110+ races per season
Listed - at least $50,000 prizemoney - 280+ races per season

The Australian horse racing season runs from August to July each year and we have listed all the Group 1 and Group 2 races on the racing calendar.

The Royal Sovereign Stakes is a Group 2 Australian Thoroughbred horse race , for 3 year-old colts and geldings, over a distance of 1200 metres.

It is held in February annually at Randwick Racecourse in Sydney.

The Royal Sovereign Stakes is held on the Challenge Stakes Day as part of the Sydney Autumn Carnival. The first Group race of the year for three-year olds; the Royal Sovereign Stakes is a 1,200 metre sprint for colts and gelding offering $150,000 in prize money, the race is held alongside the Light Fingers Stakes (1200m), the Breeders Classic (1200m) and the Frederick Clissold Stakes (1200m,

Lonhro (2002), Guineas (1998), Danewin (1995) and Shaftesbury Avenue (1990) are quality gallopers to have won the Royal Sovereign Stakes.
